Work sheets

by Tony Diaz - El Librotraficante on 11/28/16

For 20 points of your homework grade, complete the following 2 assignments. Bring the completed hard copies to class:

1. Fill out the Pre-op page. You do not need to complete the portion with the 20 questions. However, you must complete all of the other questions. The link is next to this blog.

2. Fill out the blank copy of the Oral Presentation Chart. Use the Oral Presentation guide to help you. The links are next to this blog.

Journal entry homework: Write 250 - 400 words, or more, explaining why you are coming to college. Add details such as what time you wake up in the morning. Add details like how many hours you work. Explain exactly what you tell yourself to wake up when that alarm clock rings, or to stay awake to finish a reading assignment or other homework.

Re-read the example of a Research Paper. A link is provided next to this blog.

Donate to Publish a Great Mexican American Studies Textbook

by Tony Diaz - El Librotraficante on 11/23/16

Thankful for our wonderful supporters on whose shoulders we stand on. I have to thank Maqui Mendez who is the first person to donate to our campaign to publish a great textbook.

Right away, Maqui pledged a check via mail. I have to tell you a little about her. She is the mom of Ben Mendez who started NHPO National. But she also drove in one of the buses from Houston to Austin to support us as we testified against the racist textbook. Here is a picture of her on the bus sharing her story of how Mexican Americans used to be treated in Texas. With Wisdom, tenacity, and vision like hers on our side, we shall never lose. Thank you to her and all others who paved the way.

Also, thanks to our other first donors:

First donor to the textbook fund:
Maqui Mendez via check.

First Donor to the textbook fund via Indiegogo:
Daniel McFatter

First Donor to the textbook fund via Paypal:
Debra Palacios, Houston, $50

ABC 13 Houston Coverage of Our Community Planning Meeting: Controversial 'Mexican-American Heritage' textbook at center of fight

Inside a small room at the TBH, an east end theater, opponents of a textbook on Mexican heritage were mobilizing.  -

Houston, TX November 11, 2016. Carolina, a senior in high school is ready to testify. So is Antonio, a junior in high school.

They are ready to tell the Texas State Board of Education to vote down the deceptively titled textbook "Mexican American Heritage" by Momentum Publishing and to vote to re-open the call for culturally relevant textbooks.

There are also 48 others from Houstno ready to join and support them.

We hope you will too.

We are asking you to donate to pay for the bus.
The TX State Board of Ed. is set to vote to officially reject or accept the racist textbook that you have helped us oppose.
We are renting a bus to take folks to testify back to Austin Tuesday, Nov. 15,  including over a dozen students who will testify.
We need to $2,000 to rent the bus, and we have $885 committed so far.

Can you donate and/or  help us get sponsors?

Sorry for the short notice, but the elections have overshadowed this issue, which makes our work even more important.

Of course, we need full funding by Monday to pay for the bus.

So we would need either a check or cash donation.  Paypal will work, too.

Thanks for you support in the past. I look forward to uniting to close the deal on this together.

Thank you to everyone who has united to put in check the racist textbook deceptively titled “Mexican American Heritage” by Momentum Publishing submitted for approval for use in Texas schools. As a reminder, here are some links to some of the articles about the book that defines Chicanos as violent, Latinos as uneducated, and argues that nothing of importance every came to the U.S. from south of the Texas border.

The Texas State Board of Education will officially vote on implementing or rejecting the racist textbook Friday, November 18 AFTER the presidential election. So we want to remind you to stay involved and keep up the pressure. Below, is a timeline of upcoming events and how you can help.

Vote: Tuesday, November 8, 2016: Vote to send a message that our community will not stay on the sidelines. We will participate in or protest against all issues that impact our community from now on.

There are several Texas State Board of Education seats up for election. If you live in Texas google “Who Represents Me” or click here Call them or email them to find out where they stand on this issue. Also, talk to all of your elected officials about this. Remember that Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner wrote a scathing rejection of the textbook. However, he will not directly vote on the book, but his testimony is powerful.
